Last week I was invited up to KooK’s ( http://www.khoabui.com/ )studio to help out on a model test. This was the first time I’ve ever worked with Khoa but it was definitely a great experience. He is basically a McGyver, building his own dolly and track, and shooting with some Speedo heads he found for 300 bucks. His style is pretty edgy and he had the team to do it. Some great styling, hair and make up were on set to really build his beautiful images.
This shoot was different than the others because KooK is full on crossing the realms of photo and video. (Like every good photog should these days) Shooting his videos on his 7D and editing them together rather amazingly. His dolly was built out of a hand cart, some metal piping with wooden splints evening it out, a stool and a satelite arm he had somehow procured. Totaling in about 100 bucks compared to the “pro” versions of these available for thousands of dollars, this one definitely did the trick!
Another interesting aspect of shooting with KooK, is he previews everything in Black and White. A hardcore believer that if it’s a good image in black and white, it’s a good image in color. He definitely knows what he is doing and I hope to go work with him again sometime.
You should probably all check out his work as it is absolutely fantastic!
Also in looking ahead. I think my next post will be about the assisting kit I bring to all my shoots. ( Assisting tips from the best photo assistant! )
